Chess in Prague: clubs, tournaments and cafés

Prague chess runs through its clubs, many of them chess sections of old sports unions such as Sokol, Bohemians or Dukla, meeting in Sokol halls, children's houses and university buildings. Karlín, Krč around the OAZA clubroom, Vršovice and Dejvice hold the densest clusters. Around them turns a calendar of festivals, club series and district rapids, and a few bars and cafés host tournament evenings.

Chess960 in Prague

Chess960, which Czech players also call Fischer random chess, has one dated appearance on a Prague board in the pages read for this guide: a one-day Fischer Random open inside the Prague International Chess Festival of 2025, held at a hotel and run by a club from outside the city. No later edition and no regular Chess960 evening at a Prague club, bar or café turned up.

In this variant the back-rank pieces start in one of 960 shuffled positions, so memorised openings stop helping from the first move. Between festival events it is played online at ch960.com.

How to read an entry

Entries are built from pages anyone can open: the Prague Chess Federation's club map and calendar, its league reports, the FIDE list of rated tournaments, and the clubs' own news pages. Every fact on an entry names its page and the day that page was read.

Each list opens with the entries whose newest evidence is most recent; the order says nothing about quality. A question no page answers is marked "not stated by sources". What the status lines mean, how sources are marked and where the guide stops is set out under how entries are checked.

Has a club changed its hall or its evening?

Prague clubs move between Sokol halls, schools and clubrooms, and a new league season can shift a club night or a tournament series to another weekday. If an entry is behind, or a club, bar tournament or youth circle is missing, send a short note with a link to the page that shows it.
